Closet Wine Cellar Conversions in Tigard

Tigard Wine Cellars turns ordinary closets into cooled wine storage in Tigard. Framing and a doorway are already there; what a closet lacks is a seal. The conversion supplies one with an insulated exterior-grade door, insulation and a vapor retarder behind new wall and ceiling surfaces, racking cut to the closet’s depth, and cooling whose exhaust has a proper destination.

We take on closet conversions in King City, Durham, Tualatin, Metzger and Bull Mountain as well. A closet near the kitchen works well because it can hold the bottles an open display cannot.

Closet wine cellar options

Reach-in closet conversions

A shallow reach-in closet takes racking front to back and side to side, so every inch holds bottles. The hollow-core interior door, R-2.17 in CellarPro’s table, gives way to an insulated exterior-grade door with weatherstripping on all four sides and a bottom sweep.

Walk-in closet wine rooms

Walk-in closets leave room for racking on three sides and a narrow aisle. To get insulation in, the existing walls and ceiling are either opened up or built out with furring, then lined with the vapor retarder on the house side. Outlet boxes, switches and any pipe crossing the shell are caulked or gasketed.

Pantry and spare-room conversions

Pantries and box rooms convert on the same principles. Check the wall lining first: Joseph Lstiburek’s BSI-010 for Building Science Corporation warns against paper-faced drywall in a cellar and prefers mold-resistant surfaces such as rock or wood, so standard pantry drywall is likely to come out.

Cooling a closet cellar

Breezaire puts closets on its list of spaces that must not receive a unit’s warm exhaust. A through-wall unit in a closet cellar therefore has to face a ventilated room with at least the closet’s volume, and WhisperKOOL caps that room at 85°F. A hallway or family room might work; a laundry room, garage or the next closet over will not. Failing that, ducts or a split system take the heat elsewhere.

Passive closets

Without cooling, a closet simply follows the house. That may be acceptable for bottles opened within months, but no source we reviewed sets a point at which a passive closet becomes safe for aging, and Purdue Extension’s ageability guidance assumes a temperature held constant within about ±2–3°F. A closet in a Tigard house on summer afternoons in the 80s is unlikely to hold the steady 55°F long-term storage calls for.

Reach-in wine closets near the kitchen

A closet off the kitchen or dining area splits the job well: the closet keeps the long-term bottles dark and cool, while a custom wine wall or open display shows what you are drinking now. It is a contained project that leaves the rest of the floor plan alone.

Permits for a closet conversion

Swapping a door and adding racking are finish work, but a new circuit for the cooling unit needs an Oregon electrical permit, and cutting a through-wall opening or rebuilding walls can bring a building permit. Within city limits the Tigard Building Division issues both; for an unincorporated Metzger address, check Washington County’s own requirements.

Closet cellar questions

Does a closet wine cellar need its own cooling unit?

For aging, yes. A closet without cooling tracks house temperature; a cooled, insulated closet holds the steady conditions wine needs.

Where does the cooling unit vent?

Through the wall into a suitable ventilated room, as described in the cooling section above, or through ducts or a split system to a utility space or outdoors. Never into another closet, a laundry room or a garage.

What has to change besides the racking?

The door, the insulation and the vapor control. An insulated exterior-grade door replaces the interior one, walls and ceiling get insulation and a warm-side vapor retarder, and penetrations are sealed.
